![]() ![]() "I couldn’t sing - well, I didn’t sing - I had never been a lead singer. As Walsh says, he only took over vocals for the band because the group's last singer quit the night of a gig. Peters' addition was an obvious fit for the James Gang, but the same could not be said for vocalist Kenny Weiss, who was briefly brought in to try and relieve Walsh from the double duty of singing and playing guitar. It was just natural right from the beginning." We’re completely different people and we never really hung around together, but we could always play together. If we got together tomorrow, it would just work. "I mean, we had the same record collections, we liked the exact same kind of music - we could just play. "We could just play instantly," Peters adds. It was like, 'Well, Tom’s got his wish.' The next day, we sat Tom down and we said, 'Tom, you know, we talked to Dale Peters, another bass player, and you’re free to go.' He goes, 'Wow, thanks man, that’s a load off my mind.' Literally, the following night, Dale was in the slot and we never looked back." It was instantaneously an upgrade, which we never expected. Why don’t you come down tonight after the gig and we’ll play for a while?' And he did and it was magic. We have an unhappy bass player, who I think we’re going to have to replace. ![]() "I said, 'Well, there’s a situation here. I was thinking of going back to school,'" Fox recalls. "I said, 'What are you doing? I know the band is not doing well.' He said, 'Yeah, we’ve kind of split up. Peters was drumming at the time, but he'd since picked up the bass - and Fox happened to know he was at loose ends with his own group, the Case of E.T. 'Tom, aren’t you somewhat equally responsible for the music we’re making? What do you want to do?' 'Well, I don’t know, but I can’t take this anymore.'"įortunately, Fox knew just who to call: Dale Peters, who had replaced him in a college band at Ohio State University a few years before. You know, it was like, he was, I thought, a very fine player. I don’t think I can play it anymore.' Joe and I were blindsided. Fox remembers Kriss saying: "'I hate this band. In August 2006, the trio appeared performing live on The Howard Stern radio show on Sirius satellite radio. In summer 2006 the Walsh/Peters/Fox lineup of the group toured the United States. The “classic” lineup of the band (Walsh, Peters, Fox) reunited to perform at an election rally for Bill Clinton in 1996, appearances on The Drew Carey Show in the 1998-99 season, and at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in February 2001, drawing fans from all over the globe.Īs of May 2004, Glenn Schwartz was playing guitar and singing Thursday nights at “Major Hooples” in the Flats, Cleveland. Fox was the only remaining member of the original quintet when they disbanded early in 1977. The band broke up following a final recording, “Jesse Come Home” (which referred to the band’s namesake, the outlaw Jesse James), which was made with the collaboration of early member Phil Giallombardo. After two albums, “Bang” and “Miami”, Bolin was replaced by vocalist Bubba Keith and guitarist Richard Shack, who made “Newborn” (which featured a cover of the Elvis Presley song “Heartbreak Hotel”). Bolin left in 1974 to replace Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple. Troiano left to join Guess Who and was replaced by Tommy Bolin. Vocalist Roy Kenner and guitarist Domenic Troiano then joined the band. ![]() After two more albums, Thirds, with the single “Walk Away,”, and the live album James Gang Live in Concert, Walsh left the band to perform solo and later join the Eagles. The band opened for The Who during a tour of Britain. In July of 1970, the band released its second album James Gang Rides Again which included the hit single “Funk #49.” By this time, Dale Peters had replaced Kriss on bass. The band then released its debut album Yer’ Album. In 1968 Joe Walsh replaced Schwartz when Schwartz left the band to join Pacific Gas & Electric. The founding members of the band were drummer Jim Fox, bassist Tom Kriss, guitarist Ronnie Silverman, keyboardist Phil Giallombardo, and guitarist Glen Schwartz. After the group split in early 1977, there have been reunion concerts at various times in 1996, 1998, 2001, and 2005–2006. Though the band was not a huge commercial success, the fame garnered by guitarist Joe Walsh (who replaced the original guitarist in 1968) has since made the group more notable.
